To say the speedwells Porsche 997 Turbo-R is evolving is an understatement, it’s come a very long way from its first incarnation, finished in Black with fitted with a set of 14x19 VAD CR Evolution 6 spokes, it was such a sinister looking beast and we never thought for one minute that look could be improved, but we were oh so very wrong, in its latest overhaul this is one 997 that just gets sexier every time we see it.

The Speedwells Porsche 997 GT3R Turbo

So what’s changed since the last shoot we did with this beauty, well quite a lot under the skin with a huge boost in power, with now over 700 + BHP to play with. On the outside apart from the colour change which we covered in an older blog post the engine cove and rear wing assembly has also been changed to a GT3 style which suits the built so much better with a larger rear wing also in preparation so it can be changed according to Iby's mood.

The rear bumper has also had a slight update with a mesh grill delete so you get to see the stainless x pipe exhaust set up, which looks so much cleaner.

So what’s next for this this impeccable build, only time will tell, but you can rest assured we will bring you any changes that happen over the up and coming hibernation period that’s due over the winter months.

It's always good to have a home grown build especially when it's one that wears an aero kit of your own, to actively promote and have around you at your disposal Is so good to have, especially when the build in question is owned by one of your close friends Iby the owner of Speedwell Wheel Refinishers, personally I'm extremely pleased he took the bull by the horns and took on this epic build, as I know how anal he is when it comes to perfection and that's exactly what this 997 Turbo is... utter perfection.

Porsche 997 Turbo-R

As most of you know that follow the blog or our social media news, this 997 Turbo started life as the Dragon performance demo car, you can read all about that in an older blog as the car has come an awful long way since that stage in its life, the less said about that look the better, and the first 12 months of its life with Iby the 997 remained in its basalt black colour-way but I always knew it wouldn't stay that colour as a black 997 was never really on the shopping list to start with, but right car, right place and above all the right money the deal as we know was done, with a colour change at some point in the near future.

Now we loved the car in its black form, but it did hide a lot of the beautiful touches the R aero kit has and with the new colour you get to see those touches in all their stunning glory, as they just stand out, like the front fender vents, the rear bumper vents, and just how wide the car really is, it’s so wide, at roughly 7 feet and it just oozes road presence, I personally was pretty sceptical when Red was discussed with regards the potential colour change and I have to say he nailed it, because it really is stunning.

As with any build you get to collaborate and get involved with various companies, and although Iby did most of the work himself there are a few companies that need a mention with regards the input and help that has been fantastic, especially Taj and Perfection Midlands Limited who just so happens to reside next door to the Speedwells empire, he applied the first round of paint, giving the build its first lease of life

Shoot location, the custard factory Digbeth Birmingham

The boys at MSL Customs who have totally transformed the look of this R conversion, I must say the wrap is the best we have seen to date and I have personally been around a lot of wrapped cars, this one they smashed it out the parts as this is not an easy one to pull off, the beauty of this is it looks like paint, the finish is that good.

We would also like to thank Bilstein uk for not only supplying a first class set up for this Turbo, but also for the bespoke specification we so desperately needed for this conversion, which we now offer exclusively for the 997R conversion, along with the up and coming 991R.

Markski Tuning has also been an absolute legend with the tuning side on this Turbo, with his Intercoolers sitting either side of the R bumper and his ECU mapping skills makes for one seriously fast road car, with the best part of 700 HP now on tap, it certainly has the go to match all that show.

With the Build now complete and Iby content for the foreseeable it was time to take the car out for a little shoot, so we paid our friendly neighbourhood Spiderman a visit down in Digbeth Birmingham which is a great location for such an epic car.

It’s now time to enjoy the build and get to as many shows as we can this year and it will soon be joined by another GT3 road car with our very own BMW Z4 V8 coming to the end of its build and if you fancy building your very own 997R then get in touch with us, we will be more than happy to discuss your individual requirements.

Speedwells Porsche 997 GT3-R Turbo

The Porsche 996 seems to be the most disliked Porsche build alongside the 955 Cayenne, personally we love the look but we do understand why people dislike the look, you only have to look at the older generations of the 930, 964, 993 chassis to see there was a huge jump in styling to the 996 chassis, with the front end being the most discussed topic on this model and something Porsche themselves must of taken on-board too, as when they launched the 997 model it looked more like the older 911, 964, 993 models rather than an evolution of the 996 as we would of expected.

Full aero conversion available to convert the Porsche 996 to the 997 GT3R 2013 Chassis

There seems to be many offering upgrades for the 996, the most popular at first was the 996 to 997 face lift, with the 991 look now and option for the 996, but we don’t personally like either. The best one to hit the market so far is our Japanese partners Old & New with their amazing slant nose, that really does transform the look of the 996 model, its extreme but we have to admit we love the slant nose on any Porsche chassis, we are looking at building our very own Kremer 997 K3R this year all being well, and that is the ultimate original slant nose, it’s the king of kings.

With not a lot of love be shown for the 996 we too have set out to look into transforming the look and we feel we have the ultimate 996 make over with the 997 2013 R upgrade now available as an upgrade option this year and will be added to our website.

From the Porsche 996 to 997 chassis there isn't a huge difference, but there is enough to keep a good body work specialist / mechanical expert busy for a while, but we take the pain out of the conversion by offering all the conversion parts to make the job so much easier.

Parts for the conversion consist of the full R13 exterior wide body work, we supply in GRP cloth or carbon fibre, as well as the rear 996 to 997 conversion parts, you will also need the front bonnet and you can then add as many optional extras as you require from light weight carbon cup doors, carbon fibre roof, full flat under floor, kevlar arch liners, we also offer a multitude of rear engine covers from the RSR, GT3R ducktail with various wing assembly, we also have a 993 GT2 Evolution style with the air intakes that sit either side of the main wing which looks well on any Porsche chassis.

996 to 997 GT3 Conversion & aero parts

We can also supply bespoke built coilover suspension set up for this conversion from our partners Bilstein or JRZ, built to our own specification, as well as 18” or 19” 3 piece forged wheels in either magnesium or aluminium, or our hybrid carbon fibre barrels with magnesium centres.

For any further details on this aero upgrade for your 996 chassis then get in touch with us to discuss further, we are happy to build or we can supply the parts only with shipping all over the world.

So if your 996 is looking tiered, or you just fancy a road going R13 conversion, then feel free to get in touch and start planing the overhaul of your Porsche 996
