Every time January comes round we have a decision to make, do we head to the Autosport show at Birmingham, or the Tokyo Auto Salon in Japan, this year the TAS2017 show won the toss up and are we glad we made that choice, to say the show was brilliant is an understatement, for us it’s the show of the year, and one we just don’t like to miss, sorry Autosport, but Japan does it bigger and better.

Tokyo Auto Salon 2017 (TAS)

For this trip we teamed up with our good friend Iby at Speedwells, and it was his first Japanese visit, so it was up to us to show him around and take care of him, and as he hasn’t stopped talking about it since, I think we can safely say he enjoyed his trip immensely, he is a big Japanese sport car fan and his current line up is a 700+ wide body supra, with an all new black wide body in build process, as well as the awesome 280ZX V8 Turbo he is also currently building, so this trip was to add a little inspiration to his up and coming projects, as well as getting to see a little bit of Tokyo.

Our hotel was a stone throw from the Messe hall where the TAS show is held year in year out, it seemed so much bigger this year than it has the previous years, and the cars on show, as always in Japan was mind blowing, although the continuing trend of over fendered cars was in full force, and to be honest if you have seen one you have seen one you have seen them all, the cut and paste kit are in full flow and sorry apart from the odd over fender conversion like the BN Sports RX7 or the awesome Old & New Porsche 997, the rest had little or no interest, although we did capture a few pictures for all to view.

The show was set over 3 huge halls, plus the outside entertainment, and it took us a full two days to get around it all, but as its set out so well, one halls just flows into the other apart from halls 9,10 & 11 that are set away from the main halls, but worth the visit just to see the Top Secret R32 and the BN Sport wide body RX7, they both made us drool.

Our personal favourites from the show have to be the wide body Aston Martin Vantage from ACR Performance and the Porsche 997 flat nose from Old&New Japan, we will be bringing both conversions to European shores, and we will cover both in up and coming blog posts.

With the show covered on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Sunday was a free day, so we decided on heading off to visit Tokyo city, with a trip to Ginza, the highlight of the day was walking around the kaminarimon, which is a great experience, full of the old traditional Japanese buildings, and miles of little market stalls. Until next year Japan, it can’t come round quick enough.

So we kick off our 2017 year in style with our tuning partners in South Africa Scribante Racing and their awesome Porsche 997 Turbo GT3R Build for the new race season, and boy oh boy these guys are not messing about, this is one serious 997 build, let’s hope they have some competition with the other teams that will line up next to these guys on the grid for the national supercar series, it’s going to be a pretty epic race season, and one we can't wait to follow and report on.

So with the first week of January well under way the aero pack had finally landed in Johannesburg, and the boys wasted zero time getting the kit in place ready for prepping and installation, even the roof has come in for some light weight carbon, with the lightweight carbon doors and polycarbonate windows still in manufacturing process, as they leave no stone unturned in the search of a lightweight race car, with speed to match.

The engine is from the Turbo S model, that has had some serious modification, as well as the race gearbox, with the suspension, upright and hubs coming straight off a Cup race car, with AP brakes supplying the stoppers & discs, just looking at all of the parts being thrown at this build is making our mouth water.

The wheel choice come from our long term wheel partner AG Wheels, as we work hand in hand with them. Scribante wanted was a multispoke wheel, a design similar to the old lemans style Porsche race wheels, so the 10 spoke race look F120 was the design of choice, with centre lock configuration, in 12x18 front and 13x18 rear that will be shod with 18” race slicks 30/65R18 front and 31/70R18 Rear.

The body work consists of a lot of part, with all the standard parts:

Front Bumper, Front splitter, front canards, front vented fenders, side skirts, rear quarter panels, rear bumper, rear diffuser.

They also wanted the full optional extras, to reduce as much weight as possible, whilst adding as much down force to the car as possible.

Compete flat under floor panels, front and rear arch liners, roof section, rear engine cover, rear wing with supports and end plates, 12x18 & 13x18 centre locks wheels.

We will bring you more on the build as it takes shape over the next few weeks, as we get ready to start the process for a full road going version that will be prowling the streets of California, from track car to street car.

For the new 2017 season we have added another high quality forged wheel range, Klassen ID. As with all the brands we promote and sell , quality is at the forefront of our decision, yes the designs are important, but quality is the first thing we look for in a brand, would we fit a set on our own vehicle, so if we are promoting a brand, we wear it with pride.

Klassen ID have been a round quite a while, what caught our eye was some of the innovative designs they have hit the market with over that last few months, the added benefit is they complement our current line up, yes we have some design familiarities, but we also have many fresh designs that will do well in our European /Australian market, so it’s a brand we are very much looking forward to hitting the market with.

As with any custom forged wheel brand, there is a huge list of size, widths, applications, designs & finish available, this is the beauty of any custom manufactured wheel range, you can bespoke build the wheel design to your exact specification, fine tuning a forged wheel build is exquisite and Klassen wheels are no different, the options of what can be done are endless.

For any European enquiry on this amazing brand, email the VAD team, we will be more than happy to help you build the perfect Klassen setup for your pride and joy.
