The last few months has seen us search for the ultimate exotic wheel product for a god friend and long term client, our search has uncovered quite a few carbon wheels, but most of them have been rather disappointing, as not all is as it seems in the world of carbon wheels, and it seems apart from a couple of manufacturers, none of the carbon parts have been tested, or been fitted to any vehicles and driven on, so its been quite an eye opener, but in our search we found a great company in Lite Speed Racing and we will we will be working with Patrick over the next few weeks.

In our search for the ultimate product, it lead us back to a company that produces light weight 1 & 2 piece Forged Magnesium wheels, its a company we have been wanting to work with for some considerable time, TWS Forged Japan

TWS Forged

Back in 2012 at the Tokyo Auto Salon, we discuss the possibilities of importing TWS Forged wheels, manufactured by the one of the best forging companies in the world, Tan-ei-sya Japan, they had some beautiful designs back then, but due to commitment elsewhere with other brands and the fact TWS already had a dealer in place looking after the European market, we didn’t pursue the brand any further, it was only in 2017 at the TAS show in Tokyo, that once again we were drawn to their stand, drooling over their wheel design, they manufacture forged wheels for most forms of motorsport, to include the Aston Martin GT3 team, as well as the Japanese Super GT, so they have a pretty impressive pedigree and know a lot about how to produce light weight wheels, but what caught our eye this time round was the Magnesium range of wheels they manufacture, they are the pinnacle road wheel.

Magnesium wheels for road application have never seen a popular choice, mainly down to lack of companies that produce magnesium forgings, and of course the cost. Back when we first started selling wheels some 20 years ago, you had only two companies producing Mag wheels, BBS & O.Z, mainly for track use for race teams around the world, and the odd set would make it onto a road car in a limited run, like Lamborghini’s Diablo SV, but the Magnesium was cast not forged, it wasn’t long before the likes of Lamborghini went back to forged aluminium n the late 90’s you saw work wheels Japan manufacture the Rezax 11 mesh design with a Magnesium centre, but it was expensive, with huge lead time and it didn’t sell.

So what are the benefits of magnesium forged wheels, apart from being super light weight, the are more durable and rigid than aluminium forged, being lighter weight they also have the advantage of reducing the un-sprung mass weight, whilst being kinder on the braking and suspension components, a lighter wheels is much easier to spin and also stop, die to the low momentum of inertia, Forged magnesium wheels yield shorter braking distance and faster acceleration, improve manoeuvrability and overall whilst reducing fuel economy, with the added bonus of a high heat conductivity property of magnesium also means cooler brake disks so a longer life for brake pads, these are just some of the advantages of fitting a light weight forged magnesium wheel.

The Ultimate TWS Forged Magnesium Collection

A lot has changed over the last few years TWS not only manufacture Magnesium wheels, they have mastered the process to perfection, with some beautiful designs available, in a 1 piece as well as a couple of 2 piece designs, they have also a stunning collection of 1, 2 & 3 piece forged aluminium wheels, available in all of the usual custom bespoke sizes, widths, applications and finishes, email the VAD team for more details on this amazing wheel brand, they have every option you could possibly think of, if money is no object, fit the best, fit magnesium forged wheels.

The Lamborghini Huracan needs no introduction, it one of the most photographed cars across all media networks, and certainly one of the most beautiful looking cars to ever come out of the Bologna factory, from any viewing point this car is just stunning.

For us at VAD, this is one car that needs zero body modification, and that in itself speaks volumes, as we are a company that loves to modify even the very best, it certainly doesn’t need any bolted on over fender flares that seem to be the rage at the moment, its perfect just the way it is, and the only enhancement we would consider is the wheels, and usually Lamborghini get this spot on, but not with the Huracan, this is one area you can enhance, with wonderful results, as we can showcase here with this particular model.

This is the LP610-4 and this has been fitted with a set of Klassen ID wheels, the M10R to be more precise, and it has put the finishing touch to this amazing looking machine, finish in gloss black, with a slightly larger sizing and width front to rear, 9x20 & 12x21, with the larger tyre set up, Klassen prove if you modify tastefully, you can improve on perfection.

It’s taken a little longer than we thought it would, but as they say..."Perfection takes time" and we are happy to report the our BMW Z4 has finished the first part of the build journey with the guys over at Emerald M3D in Norfolk, who have finally finished doing what they need to do with the ECU Tuning, for now at least, so it’s on to the next phase and that involves heading to good friend Craig Taylor at Dynotorque so he can start working his magic, and the first bit of magic will be to remove the stock BMW 2.5ltr M54B heart and replace with a much larger one, in the form of a LS3 V8.

Whilst we have been waiting with eager anticipation, we decided to get with our buddies at AG Wheels factory and discuss designs, size and finish, and as per usual in any VAD build, we will be fitting 2 different designs, with 2 different finishes, its standard practise and its something we have always done and enjoy doing, let’s face it you never see that both sides at the same time, it works well and it's always a great talking point, so with the AG input from Tu and Yuya, the wheel designs were chosen, with the AGL 23 from the AG Luxury lineup, and the F422 from the AG Wheels lineup, we were looking to build the all new VAD LMS, at one point as it would really suit this build, but as this is a collaboration build with lots of various companies being involved, we wanted to show our appreciation to the Avant Garde factory, by running their two brands on this particular build, and looking at the 2 designs in all of their glory, were so glad we did.

AG Luxury AGL23

13X19 AG Luxury AGL23 Matte Black Centre, Gloss Black outer rim & Inner Barrel, Spec 2 Concave Profile, with exposed Black Hardware

The finish and profile we made the ultimate decision on, with a little help from Tu with one of the finishes, the AGL 23 we decided to play it a little safe, it’s a classic race look design and we were always going to run with a matte & gloss black finish, with black hardware, as the base car will be staying white, with black carbon details, this was always going to be the look we wanted on the one side of this build, so that particular design in black finish was cemented and put into production.

The AG F422 idea came about from seeing the design in F522 disguise on Rilbers Audi A4 wide body Avant, the build and the wheels really caught our eye as it’s a wheel design that was new and fresh and really stood out, especially in the concave specification 3 profile that was built for Rilbers A4, or as some call it the floating spoke, this design has been at the forefront of our mind since we decided to move forward with the build, but we knew the spec 3 was not possible with our wheel specification, so we had a choice of the spec 1 or the spec 2 concave profiles, with the later being chosen, especially with the race look we wanted to achieve, now it was time to decide on the finish.

AG Wheels F422

13X19 AG Wheels F422 Matte Brushed Monaco Bronze Centre, with Gloss brushed outer rim & Inner Barrel, Spec 2 Concave Profile, with exposed Bronze Hardware

A couple of weeks earlier Tu sent us a sample of the all new Monaco Bronze finish they had just introduced to the AG range and it took our breath away, this was just the colour we had in mind, it was first seen on the awesome McLaren that MC Customs built for one of their clients, it’s a real show stopping finish, so we hit the green light and decided on a brushed matt centre with gloss inner barrel and outer lip, with exposed bronze hardware, now to look at some decent rubber.

We will keep you posted on the developments over the next few weeks as the build takes shape, now its heading back to Dynotorque, things should progress very quickly.
