Our good friend Iby at speedwells refinishers is at it again, this is one guy that never seems to rest, even with a busy work schedule he still seems to find the time to put together a high quality build, you only have to look at this beautiful wide body Supra’s to see the guy has a serious problem when it comes to chilling out and relaxing, all we can say is he must have one very understanding wife. The Speedwell Supra builds need no introduction, the Red Bomb changed every year without fail, Ibrar was always honing and perfecting the little details, and sometimes those little details were hard to spot, not for us as we are all about the details, then he hit the scene with the the Black Bomb 11, to then shock everyone by selling them both, but as Iby said it was time to move on to new pastures new, we have already mentioned his up and coming Porsche 997R Bi-turbo build that will be taking place over the next few weeks in another blog post and we will cover that build in minute detail, but for now its this build that has grabbed our attention.

Datsun 280ZX 2 seater

Speedwells Datsun 280ZX 2 Seater V8 Turbo under construction

We knew last year when we spotted a Datsun 280ZX 2+2 turn up outside the Speedwell HQ that he was planning another project, but those plans changed slightly when he acquired what he had been on the lookout for a while, the more desirable 2 seater version of the classic 280ZX, which just happened to be an unfinished project, the Datsun 280ZX is rare beast on UK shores, so the 2 seater is a peach of a find, nothing quite like an unfinished project especially when they can be had for the right money, and this shell was a perfect canvas for what is about to happen.

It wasn't long before the 280ZX was hit with the usual speedwell modification haul, with the inside being fitted with a half roll cage, boot floor mounted stainless fuel cell, rear bumper deleted and smoothed, arches cut back and welded ready for the fat rubber that will be housed under the new extended bolt on fender extension, that have been modified extensively for the new styled body.

The bonnet has also come in for some modification with a beautifully detailed vent that has been relocated and reshaped, the attention to detail is a credit to Iby’s skill set, he knows exactly what he wants and how to execute that process in to an award winning build, which we are sure this will be.

The engine choice is possibly not the choice most people will expect but we love it, we know the 2JZ and the RB26 has been mentioned, someone even suggested the 3.8 VR38DETT V6 from the R35 GTR, but its none of those as he had a spare 3UZ V8 Turbo, that he had sitting around, which will be matted to a BMW M3 6 speed gearbox, so a trip to Dynotorque for the necessary engine and gearbox mounts to be fabricated by the legendary skills of Craig Taylor.

The next step the shell will hit the paint booth, with the colour yet to be decided, after that it’s time for the suspension components to be added from Techno toy tuning, with the beautiful constructed GTX2 adjustable control arms, coilover suspension and 5 stud billet hubs, that will be fitted to the refinished and upgraded 300ZX rear axle, the ingredients to this build are mind blowing.

We will be following the build as it happens, with wheel decision yet to be made, size, width, finish, along with the most important …the design, what we do know is it will be 3 piece forged, with huge outer lips. Bookmark this build as its going to be one serious 280ZX, yet again a contender for Europe’s finest.

The Porsche 997 is our favorite of all the Porsche chassis, we have a great fondness for the earlier 964 & 993 models, but we have a super soft spot for the 997 especially in the 997.2 guise. Available in various engine and body configurations, we love them all, the Turbo, GT2 or the GT3 are no doubt the cream of the crop but our personal choice would be the C4S with the 3.8 engine, it a beauty, naturally aspirated, and with 355 BHP is no slouch with plenty of go to match those good looks, with so many possibilities to enhance the output, with a Super charger being our favorite choice for engine upgrade, the bolt on VF charger looks OEM and you get to add just over 100 BHP, how does 510 BHP with 380 ft-lbs of torque, and that epic charger noise.

We have always said its difficult to improve on perfection, and as the 997 has those devilish good looks, is it even possible, well yes it can be with the stunning R wide body programme, and its bloody stunning from any angle, any viewing point it just sets the juices flowing, its breathtaking to look at, especially that rear end.

The aero kit is quite an extensive package and if your looking to build the ultimate track beast like our friends Scribante racing built, then you you need pretty much every part available, but if not then you only need the very basic aero kit for road application, email the team for details on this stunning conversion for the 997 chassis, as well as wheels, tyres, suspension, with fitting and painting also available on request.

Follow the up an coming Bi-Turbo build that will be happening in the coming weeks, its the first UK built wide body R, we are very much looking forward to being apart of this build with our alloy wheel refinishing partners Speedwells.

It’s been a busy few weeks of late hence the lack of blog posts and believe us it’s not for the lack of material to talk about as we have so much to share, it’s purely down to man power and not enough hours in the day, but seeing our good friends dream build hit the track in anger was just too not to blog about, as days like this rarely happen in the UK scene, so let us take one meticulously put together GTR, the living legend that is Hiroshi Tamura, who happens to be the chief product specialist of Nissan's mighty GTR, basically he is the brains behind the R35, want to read more…we thought you would.

Unleashing that 1000+ BHP at Silverstone shake down

We got to know Anthony Gaylard the owner of this special GTR LM1-RS back in 2015 as we had a mutual problem with the supplier Dominik Bahn of Carbostuff Engineering, (which you can read all about in our other blog news) we have stayed in touch since and I have personally followed his build over the last couple of years, and wow he has put together one amazing road legal monster, as I have said this is one meticulously built machine and one that he hopes will get him a sub 7 minute time at the green hell they call the Nordschleife, yep the Nurburgring, which is the main reason this car has been constructed, the car has been built to have the best of everything available, no expense spared, built by craftsmen, and of course a huge wad of cash, this is what we call at VAD a man’s GTR.

Hiroshi Tamura seal of approval

At VAD we are all about high quality, it’s in our DNA and there isn't a day that goes by that we aren't disappointed with the GTR scene, seeing many being stripped of all the OEM Nissan parts, then adding mass produced Chinese manufactured wet laid Carbon junk, which is mostly glass fibre with a thin layer of carbon, which is then highly glossed for effect, bonnets, fenders, rear wings, etc, its painful, but unfortunately it’s all part and parcel of any scene including the GTR, so for me personally Anthony’s build is a refreshing change, seeing it fitted with proper high quality light weight carbon fibre parts inside and out, were pleased to say no Chinese crud on this build, just top end parts for a top end GTR, pure carbon fibre made just how it should be, in the autoclave.

The parts list for the build is simply sensational, its mouth-watering, you can see the endless search for parts perfection, and why wouldn't it be, chasing that sub 7-minute time at the Nordschleife is no easy task, hence the reason I keep seeing the huge ££££ every time I read through the list of parts its taken to build this epic machine, which makes the hairs on my whole body stand on end, this is a serious build, I love love every detail, as well as the overall concept.

We cannot wait to follow the car on its epic journey chasing the lap.

They say something good comes out of something bad and maybe we have something to thank for our mutual misfortunes, meeting good people whilst enjoying great builds, kudos Anthony you have built a stunner, bring on the Nordschleife, I personally can't wait.
